Finding Magic in Marriage: Cooking For And With Your Spouse

This week’s feature is from Laryssa Moore, my sister-in-law and recipe maker behind The Simple Plate – a fresh food blog featuring healthy dishes and decadent sweets anyone can (and should!) add to their weeknight recipe list. Laryssa is an amazing cook, and I am so excited to be featuring some tips and tricks from her about cooking for and with your spouse (and family, too!).

I got The Newlywed Cookbook as one of our wedding gifts when we were first married, and it’s one of my favorite wedding gifts because I LOVE to cook with my husband John. We will cook together and for each other, and both really enjoy being in the kitchen trying both regular and new recipes. So when I found out that my brother’s fiance loved to be in the kitchen as well, of course I had to get them the same cookbook! A gal after my own heart, Laryssa takes recipes and turns them into her own modified yummy creations that fit her lifestyle and taste. Even if you wouldn’t call yourself a natural in the kitchen, cooking together is something you should try at least once a week! It will bring you closer in marriage, make you want to try new recipes together, and will challenge your patience with learning a new skill.

Make sure you don’t miss out on Laryssa’s free recipe for French Bread (in a downloadable PDF) at the bottom of this post, too! 🙂

Favorite thing to cook? “I love cooking Mediterranean food, particularly Italian and Middle Eastern. Pizza is on the menu regularly as well as humus and pita bread. And with the herbs from our garden I like to make lots of pesto and put it on everything!” Continue reading

Husband Approved Honey Soy Pork Tenderloin

At 38 weeks pregnant and knowing izzy could be here any day now, I definitely know two things: first, I do notttt want to be slaving away in the kitchen trying to come up with various lunch and dinner recipes 5-7 days out of the week until she’s here, and second, I sure as heck don’t want to do that after she’s here either, because really who has the time and energy to take care of a newborn and be in the kitchen making yummy meals every day AND want to clean up the mess afterward?! Psh! So earlier this week I decided I would try my hand at making 2-3 crockpot meals a week for the next two weeks – as well as prepare some make ahead crockpot freezer meals that I could throw together in less than 5 minutes while holding a baby. Husband Approved Green Smoothie

The Mini Apartment - Husband Approved Green Smoothie Recipe.JPGI love to make smoothies and shakes of all kinds – breakfast ones, meal replacement ones, post workout ones, protein ones – I’m a fan of it all. Except for the “green smoothie.” I’ve never tried to put greens in a smoothie, though I’ve heard it’s a healthy thing to do. But I’d rather eat my leafy greens in a salad, thanks. John told me he tried a kale one once and afterwards decided he would rather have his greens in salads, too. Taste test = 2/10.

I was at Costco the other day stocking up on my favorite things to buy in bulk for John and I (more on shopping for two at Costco later), and decided to add this giant 1.5lb bag of power green mixed salad to my cart on a whim. I normally don’t buy salad in bulk, but here’s how I became convinced to do so this time: Continue reading
