Come, we fly! We are halfway to all hallows eve and I’ve got the best little peg doll craft for you to make this weekend to add some whimsy to your Halloween decor!
If there is one Halloween movie I can quote every line to, it’s Hocus Pocus. It’s my favorite one to watch during spooky season! I am DIY’ing a lot of our seasonal decor this year, and of course had to make something hocus pocus themed!
Peg dolls are something I’ve always wanted to try my hand at. After I saw how darling these came out, I had to share them with you as a weekend mini project! Now I want to make more 🙂 Follow along for a relatively easy tutorial on how to make these yourself:
You will need:
Peg dolls
3 round wooden beads like these (two for Winnie’s hair and one for Mary’s hair)
Colored yarn for the hair (I chose this one for Winnifred, this one for Mary, and this one for Sarah)
Hot glue gun
Thin, small paintbrush
Black and white acrylic paint for the eyes, red acrylic paint for the lips,
and any other paint you’d like to use for the body
Fabric scraps to make their dresses and capes
(I used a variety of ribbon, felt, and tulle for this)
Pencil to lightly draw on eyes and mouths
How to make them:
I started with making the hair first, since that was the going to be a challenging step. I wanted to make sure I got it perfect so that I could breeze through the rest!
For Winnies hair
Using the hot glue, glue two of the round wooden beads to the top of the peg doll head. Once they’re secure, start wrapping the orange yarn. You will begin around the base of the wooden beads on the head once or twice, then wrap the yarn around the first wooden bead and hot glue it to secure to the top. Repeat for the other side of her hair.
For Mary’s hair
Using the hot glue, glue one wooden bead off center on the peg doll’s head. Once it is secure, wrap the yarn around the base of the peg doll head a couple of times, then start wrapping the yarn around the wooden bead until it looks like a swirl ice cream cone. To create that “S” that her hair turns into at the top, leave a small bit of yarn sticking up once you reach the top.
For Sarah’s hair
Cut 6″ sections of the yellow yarn and fold in half. Pinch one of the yarn sections together at the top and glue to the head where the hairline starts. Don’t worry if it looks too long or wonky, you can trim the yarn later. You will repeat this method on one side of the head moving towards the back to create a “part” for the hair. Then repeat for the other side of the head.
Next, paint the body and add their clothing
Here’s where you can get creative! I did two coats of paint on the bodies. I then chose fabric scraps that represented the colors the characters wear in the movie: purple and green for Winifred, pink and red for Sarah, and orange and rust for Mary. I made capes out of felt, and laid some black Halloween tulle over the top of the felt capes for extra flair.
Lastly, add their eyes and lips
Here’s the other fun bit – personalizing the mouths for each witch!Using your pencil, lightly draw on the lips and eyes on each peg doll. Winnie is known for her pursed, heart shaped lipstick in the movie. So to create that, dab two tiny dots of paint in the middle of the lips you drew, and then dab a tiny dot on the bottom of the lips right under the two dots you just did.
For Mary’s quirky crooked smile, dab a tiny line of paint on the top lip slightly off center to the right from the mouth, and then repeat on the bottom lip but off center to the left. For Sarah’s, a simple thin + wide heart lip line will do!
For the eyes, dab two tiny dots of black paint using the end of your paintbrush (not the bristle side) to get them perfectly round, and then an even smaller dab of white paint using the same method to add a glimmer to each eye.
And you’re done! Display them on the mantle along with my DIY spooky bubbling cauldrons, or let your kids play with them, whatever your heart fancies. Hope you enjoyed this weekend’s mini project! If you make these, tag me on Instagram, @theminiapartmentblog. I’d love to see!
